FOOTBALL.

ALL BLACKS DEFEAT BORDER BY 22 POINTS TO 3. East London, August 4. With an exhibition of true New Zealand football the All Blacks beat Border by two converted tries, three tries, and one penalty goal (22 points) to one penalty goal (three points) at East London to-day.. It was easily the best exhibition the All Blacks have given on the tour, the forwards playing with fine combination, and the backs giving a dazzling display. Unfortunately play degenerated somewhat in the second spell. There was some unsavory mixing in the tight, and the referee, after warning the players of both sides, told Brownlie that if the rough play did not stop he would qrder off the first man caught. The biggest feature of the match was the fact that Mark Nieholls staged a spectacular comeback. It was his finest exhibition of the tour, and he gave a taste of his own true form.

Finlayson has influenza. His place on the side was taken by McWilliams. Stewart going to the back of the scrum.

The team was as follows: Full-back: D. Lindsay; threequarters: F. W. Lucas, S. R-. Carleton, B. A. Grenside; five-eighths: M. F. Nieholls, H. Lilburne; half-back: A. Strang; wing-forward: G. Scrimshaw; forwards: J. Hore, J. T. Burrows, M. Brownlie, G. I. Alley, R, M‘Williams, W. Hazlett, R. T. Stewart. After an exchange of kicks from theiciek-off, the New Zealand backs opened out a movement, but it faltered. A run by Border backs saw Duffy dazzle the opposition with a brilliant run, which was stopped by Lindsay. Three clever kicks by Daniels put Border on the attack. At the corner there were some fireworks among the forwards, but the New Zealand defence could not be penetrated. Securing the ball from a scrum at half-way away went the New Zealand backs. The leather travelled out to Grenside, who put in a great run before his path was blocked. Carleton came up for the pass, but lost the ball when over the line. Scrimshaw and Le Cordeur had a it, but the New Zealander was beaten by a dive. 1 There was a spell of fluctuating play in which the New Zealandeis had the best of things. Then Lilburne cut in smartly, sent to Nicholls, to Carleton, who raced over. Lindsay missed with the kick. All Blacks 3—Border 0. The New Zealand forwards attacked from the restart. Strang sending his backs away. The ball was handled by Lilburne and Nicholls, the last-named bewildering the defence with a nippy cut in to send Hazlett over. Nieholls missed with the kick. All Blacks 6—Border 0. The All Blacks’ backs started to give an exhibition of fine football at this stage, and took play back to the Border twenty-five, where Nieholls landed a goal from a penalty. All Blacks 9—Border 0. Then Nieholls engineered another brilliant movement from half-way. Cutting clean through the defence, he sent the ball back to Lilburne, to Strang, who raced over near the posts." Nieholls converted. All Blacks 14— Border 0. A penalty came to Border a minute later, Daniel kicking a good goal. All Blacks 14— Border 3. The next try came when Brownlie picked up in the loose and ran under the posts.- Nieholls goaled. All Blacks 19— Border 3. The All Blacks went to the attack again from the kick-off. The forwards wheeled a scrum cleverly and let Hazlett score his second try. Nieholls missed. The final whistle went with the All Blacks still holding the upper hand. All Blacks 22 —Border 3. JUNIOR MATCH. MIRANUI (16) v. FOXTON (13). Foxton and Miranui juniors met at Miranui on Saturday last in the final of the north junior championship, Miranui winning by 16 to 13. The game was played in a gale which spoilt any attempts at good football. Foxton winning the toss played with the wind, and although they kept the greens defending for the* greater part of the spell they could only register 8 points. A try by Chipper from a forward passing rush and a brilliant try by Huff in which he beat six of the opposition. He converted his own try. Half time: Foxton B—Miranui8 —Miranui 0. The second spell opened sensationally the yellow forwards rushing the ball on to the goal line where Huff passed to Broad who got over. Huff converted. Immediately the greens retaliated and from a yellow mis-kiclc the ball went straight up, the wind carried it behind the goal line and Picard scored an easy try which he converted. Within one minute after Vertongen forced his way over to score between the posts, Picard a- ' gain converting. Foxton now came again and at the end of a good rush appeared to score a good try which was not allowed. The greens were utilising the high wind and as the result of good following up, Farrell dived over. Picard failed to convert. The game was now being hotly contested, the referee allowing both sides plenty of latitude in regard to offside and forward passes. A few minutes before time as the result of a cross kick Croon gathered the ball and catching the yellow backs out of position scored an easy try. Picard failed with the

kick. The game ended shortly after. Miranui 10 —Foxton 13. • Both teams played considerably below form, the only outstanding player being Huff, who was brilliant both on attack and defence, and played football fully entitling him to a place in any junior representative team.
