THE LOCAL BAND.
A correspondent writes expressing disappointment and surprise that the Silvey Band has not been iteard during the festive season and wants to know the reason why. In conversation with Mr H. Osborne on the subject, our representative was informed that at the present tune several of the bandsmen are out of. town. Wo s were informed, however, that the hand is well in hand and members turn up' regularly to practice. A note of disappointment was expressed by Air Osborne that local institutions are not as loyal as they might be in obtaining the services of the band. He stated that the members are not allowed to receive payment, for their services, and music has to be purchased, and while the Borough Council do not charge a rental for the practiceroom, the gas used has to he paid for. The hand also had to meet certain liabilities, which they did not incur in connection with the carnival effort, amounting to £7O. He stated that the hand is now free of outstanding liabilities. If, however, it was to lie kept on a proper footing it would require the loyal support. of local institutions rather than that outside bands should be engaged.
