FLOODED FRANCES STREET

ANOTHER DRAIN PIPE TO BE LAID. MATTER DISCUSSED BY THE COUNCIL. At last night’s Borough Council meeting the road foreman (Mr G. Huntley) was in attendance and reported on the condition of Frances St. owing to the recent heavy rain. He said that at present Frances St. was drained by a nine inch 2>ipe, which ran under Messrs Ross Rough’s mill. This pipe could not cope with the amount of surface water during the wet weather in this locality. It could not be dug up, and he therefore suggested that another nine inch pipe be put down at a slightly different angle from the old one. This would probably alleviate the trouble. After a good deal of discussion this scheme was agreed to. TROUBLE IN OTHER PARTS. Cr. Thompson reported that as a result of new drains having been dug by Whitaunui Ltd. through their bleaching paddocks, his property in Baker St, had been flooded as the existing borough culvert in this locality'was now not large enough to cope with the extra water. In consequence he had lost an acre of potatoes. Cr. Walker also laid a complaint on behalf of Mr J. G. Honore, poultry farmer, of Avenue Rd, from the same cause, Mr Honore’s poultry farm has suffered inundation and considerable damage had been done. Cr. Rand reported that Union St. also required attention. Or. Parkin took exception to all these complaints. His house in Johnston St., he said, had been invaded by) the water, but he was not making a song about it and wasting the Council’s time. The rainfall was abnormal and he did not think the Council should sit there all night discussing every little flood of rain water.

It was decided that the Works Committee review the whole matter of drains and culverts at an early date.
