THE SHANNON BRIDGE.
REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE.
Mr E. Newman, M.P., introduced a deputation to the Minister of Public Works at Wellington on Tuseday in connection with the pending danger to the bridge over the Manaw’atu river, near Shannon, by river erosion. This bridge has been a soui’ce of considerable trouble and expense to the two local bodies concerned—the Mlanavatu and Horwhenua County Councils. The banks of the river to a depth of about 25 feet are composed of the river deposit, and below that there -is a great depth of grey sand. The river has made a direct attack ou the north bank, alongsidewhich is the road w’hich leads xip to the bridge, and the Manawatn County Council has had to shift back this road on three different occasions; but recently the euiTent has made a set towards the southern part of the bridge, and there is imminent danger of - the piles being washed from beneath the bridge. The deputation comprised Mr W. Murdoch (Mayor of Shannon) anil Mr R. Edwards, engineer. They explained the position to the Minister, and produced a plan of the bridge and locality showing ilie details of the trouble brewing. The Minter promised to look into the matlex*.
