■At last night's Council meeting the Mayor welcomed Cr. Hunt, who was elected at the recent by-election. Cr. Hind 1 hanked the Mayor for the welcome accorded him, made the statutory declaration, and took his scat.

At the quarterly meeting of (ho Otaki Licensing Committee on Friday, a. transfer of the license of the Family Hotel, Foxton, from F. AY. Gardes lo T. Curran was granted. An application from L. R, Freeman for a conditional license for the Foxton races was also granted.

The Council went into committee last night lo consider tenders, and on resuming business it was decided, on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Bryant, that the lenders received for painting the Town Hall not being in compliance wilh the requirements of the advertisement, no tender be accepted, and that fresh applications be invited; conditions to be drown up by the Town Hall Committee.

A drowning tragedy occurred at Titahi Bay, Wellington, on Sunday afternoon. The victim was Mr Patrick Dromgool, solicitor, of. the Public Trust Office, It appears that Mr Dromgool gave his life in an endeavour To save that of others. About 1 pan. some seven ladies and live gentlemen went out for a swim in the breakers. Two ladies, Miss Norah Kenny and Miss M. Blake, got into difficulties. Mr J. Neil went to the assistance of Miss Kenny, who though snatched by a breaker from her rescuer, had the 'good fortune to get ashore safely. Meanwhile Constable H. Williams, another member of the party, had been helping Miss Blake. When Williams had done what he could for Miss Blake, Mr Dromgool successfully lent a hand, and then proposed to go out to where Neil was struggling to save Miss Kenny. Williams endeavoured to dissuade him, urging that if" Neil could not succeed it would only mean a useless sacrifice of another life if he went out. Dromgool, however, went ; and he was last seen by Neil as the latter turned on his back, exhausted, to float. Neil and Williams both got ashore with the aid of other members of the party, but Dromgool was not seen again. The late Mr Dromgool was about 35 years of age, and had been married several mouths.

At the November meeting of the Borough Council if was decided .to notify Mr W. Hamer that the temporary building erected at the rear of the shop occupied by Mr Oxley must be removed-. at once, as the term for which the permit was given had expired. At last night’s meeting a letter was read from Mr Hamer, asking under what by-law the Council'was acting in serving the notice to remove the building. In the discussion that followed it was pointed out that the application from Mr Hamer to erect the building was “for a temporary building,” and a permit was given for six months. —It was decided, on the mol ion of Cr. Bryant, seconded by I lie Mayor, that a further letter be sent to Mr Hamer, advising that if the temporary shed is’not removed within one month, same will be removed by the Council, and flic cost debited to Mr Hamer.
