ADULTERATED MILK.
• LOCAL CASE. Ate the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr J. L, Stout, S.M., Walter S. Free, milk vendor, Foxton, was charged with (1) selling milk containing less solids other than milk fat than that prescribed by Hie regulations, and (2) selling milk containing a substance, the addition of which is prohibited. Defendant pleaded not guilty.
Morgan O’Brien, health officer and inspector under Hie Pure Foods Act, slated that on August 19th he bought a pint of milk for threepence from the boy driving defendant-’s milk earl. He sent portion of same to Wellington for analysis, and the report on same was to the effect that Hie milk contained II per cent, of added water.
The defendant, in evidence, staled that he. had no idea how the water got into the milk. It was milk that he laid purchased from a fanner. In consequence of complaints from consumers that the milk would not keep he cancelled the order either the day after or two days a Her the sample was taken. He had sent a sample of this milk to Palmerston North himself with the request that it should be analysed, hut he understood this could not be done. There had been no complaints about his own milk, Iml as he was.short, and (he public was asking for more, he had bought a quantity for the purpose of supplying (hem. His dairy and milking shed were open for inspection hy the public at any lime they desired to visit it. In reply to the Magistrate, the Inspector said he did riot have ,a copy of the regulations with him, The Magistrate said he wanfed to see the regulations, as he did not know what the standard of milk was. He would have to adjourn the ease until next Court day to allow of a copy of the regulations being provided. Mr O’Brien said he had never been asked to produce the regulations before. He would see that a copy was supplied for the next .sitting. . , The ease was accordingly adjourned until next month.
