PROPOSED SCHOOL AT MAROTIRI.

For some years there has been an agitation afoot by the settlers at Marotiri, a closely settled district about midway between Foxton and Moutoa, to have a school established. ,The late Mr Braik, a few years back, met the settlers la_ conference on the subject and at that lime some feeling was displayed between the northern and southern settlers. Those at the southern end considered that the distance to the Moutoa school was not out of the way and it should suffice. The late inspector’s report was not favourable and the agitation ceased for the time being. Since then other families have settled there and presumably the population has increased until now there are 37 children of school age at the northern or Foxton end who are not, owing to the long distance, able to attend school. In what is known as the Marotiri district there is a total of 60 children which the school would more conveniently serve. A petition was again sent to the Board asking for a school and the Board asked Inspector Strong to report on the matter. Onl Thursday last, accompanied by Mr Alf. Fraser, Board member, Mr Strong met the residents at the creamery. There was a representative gathering of settlers present, including Messrs Chrystall, C. F. Johnston, A. P. Ivastou, T. Bowe, A. Jaggar, H. Thynne, A. H. Wilson, Smith and several others, including ladies. The whole of the facts were submitted to the inspector and suitable sites suggested. The request was backed up by Mr Fraser and the Inspector appeared to take a very favourable view of the matter. His report will be forwarded to the Department and the result will be made known to the settlers. On the motion of Mr Chrystall a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Fraser and the Inspector. The settlers have made out a good case and we hope the inspector and Department will meet them in the matter and that before long a flourishing school will be established to fulfil a longfelt want.
