THE NEW GREEK PREMIER.
The new Greek Premier, M. Scouloudis, who is the nominee of cunning Constantine (brother-in-law of the Kaiser and Prussian Field Marshal), was formerly a banker in Constantinople, and after retiring from business settled in Athens. He has been elected several times to the Greek Parlia ment, and has held various portfolios In previous Governments, but not for any length of time. In 1897 he joined M. Rallis’s Cabinet as Minister for Foreign Affairs, and by his ability was able greatly to mitigate the terms of peace which were imposed on Greece by the victorious Turks after the war of 1897. When M. Veuizelos, then Premier, went to London to discuss peace terms after the Balkan war he invited M. Scouloudis to accompany him, A prominent Sydney Greek merchant, when questioned by a Sydney Morning Herald represents tive last week regarding the new appointment, said that it was somewhat of a surprise, because the new Premier had not been in active politics for six or seven years. He was, he said, one of the old school of politicians who had brought Greece to such a low ebb that it needed all the powers of Venizelos to take it out of the mire. The appointment, in the merchant’s opinion, was of a most temporary character, and he would probably disappear after the elections, which will take place nest mont h. In the meantime, as aforementioned, M. Scouloudis is the nominee ot the King and not the elect of the nation.
