LOSS OF CIVIL RIGHTS.
A SHIRKER PUNISHED.
“ A shirker of the worst class," was Police-Sergeant Henry’s description of a young man named Beavis, who was charged In court with failing to render personal service. He had been prosecuted ten times, and, as the officer pointed out, under the Defence Act he could be deprived of his civil rights for a period not exceeding ten years. The prosecution made application for such a penalty. The bench inflicted a hne ol £3 and cost, and deprived defendant of his civil rights for five years.
Any person “deprived of his civil rights ” is incapable of being appointed to any office or employment, temporary or permanent, in the Public Service, and is not entitled to vote at any election held under the legislature Act, 1908.
