FOXTON PATRIOTIC SOCIETY.

A meeting ot the local Patriotic Society, to which the public wa invited, was held in the Counci Chambers on Thursday night, for the purpose of arranging a date for the proposed carnival. There was a fair attendance, the ladies being well represented. The Mayor presided. Correspondence was read from the secretary of the combined friendly societies of Palmerston N., stating that the societies would be pleased to combine with the Foxton and Palmerston N. Patriotic societies in making the annual picnic in Foxton on New Year’s Day a patriotic affair. The Palmerston Society had already signified its willingness to co-operate with the friendly societies in the object. After some discussion it was decided that it would be better from a financial point of view for the local society to keep to its original idea of a separate carnival. It was pointed out that this would not preclude the other local patriotic societies from co-operating with Palmerston. The question of date for the local carnival was then discussed at length, and it appeared from the statements made that there was not much hope ot unanimity on this point. The secretary staled that «the tradespeople, who had given liberally to the patriotic funds in the past, objected to any dale in December, as this would interfere with their Christmas trade. The Racing Club would not consent to the racecourse being used in December or January, as it would interfere with course arrangements tor the club’s January mating. The club would be pleased lo allow the Society to use the course on any date after their meeting. Victoria Park was not considered large enough for the carnival, also it did not possess conveniences. A motion was finally carried fixing the dare ot the carnival for the middle of February. Owing to lack of unanimity on this point the date question obtruded itself, and was responsible for conflicting views. The question of appointing sub-committees was held over. It was decided to procure badges for members, the design and cost ef same to be left with the executive. A vote of thanks was passed to the Mayor for presiding, and appreciative reference was made to Mr Fraser for the great amount of time and work he had devoted to patriotic movements since occupying the civic chair. The remarks were endorsed by other speakers, and the vote carried with applause. A meeting of the executive was subsequently held.
