OBITUARY.

MRS HELEN SNOW,

Tlicro passed away in Hamilton, on Sunday, another of New Zealand’s oldest settlers, in (he person of Mrs Helen Clara Snow, widow of the lute James Hastings Snow, of Wellington. Mrs Snow came from England with her husband in 1849 to Auckland. where he had a Government appointment. Mrs Snow was tho second daughter of the Rev. Octavius Piers, vicar of Preston, Dorset, England, a granddaughter of Sir Pigott Piers, baronet, of Tristernagh Abbey, West Meath, Ireland. When the. Upvernment was removed to Wellington Airs Snow went'to reside there. Thirty years ago Airs Snow was one of the best-known personalities of Wellington, being always in'the fore in all evangelistic and philanthropic movements. A staunch member of the Church of England during her whole life, of strong evangelistic views, she was an ardent temperance worker, and was present at tho first W.C.T.C. meetings in New Zealand, comf>no() by Alps If yett, of America, -When the Salvation Army panic New Zeahind Mrs Snow followed their work with great'interest. and became a valued holder and supporter of their rescue and other good works. Airs Snow also for many years held a sale ol work annually for Protestant societies, also Dr. liurnardo’s well-known mission. In 1894, owing to ill-health, Air Snow decided to give jip ids Wellington hpme, and. KWI Airs Snow removed to Levin, staying with their second son (Mr Ernest Hastings'Snow) for a lew months, alter widen (hey sold their Wellington property, and wegf. to Huhnythorpp; making their homo tor nearly four years with their son, who is at present in Hamilton. After Mr Snow s death, in 1900 Mrs Snow spent, some years in travel, visiting South Africa Vancouver, and her old home in Dorset, England, etc. Returning to New Zealand, she continued Visiting different places pf bedlam Vew Zealand and Australia, accompanied bv her daughter, AHss Nellie Snow; now Airs Floyd Harrop, of Auckland.
