MAIN TRUNK LINE.
To be Handed Over in March
Ballasting operations on the Main Trunk Railway will be complete, so far as the main line is concerned, by the end of this month. It will soon afterwards be fit for fast traffic, and, provided other necessary arrangements are completed, in time, the 19-hour service between Wellington and Auckland should be inaugurated by the end of the year. There is still a fair amount ot work, however, to be done before the central section of the line can be transferred to the Railway Department. Several station yards have to be ballasted, and in some the platelaying has not been done, while the Horopito and Pokako station buildings have only just been started. It is expected that the line will be handed over in a completed state next March. The Public Works Department’s operations on the line will cease for a fortnight at Christmas, so that the co-operative labours may enjoy their annual holiday. This cessation of work is an annual event, for it has been found impossible to keep the men away from the cities at Christmas time.
