IMPROVEMENTS IN FLAX.

A marked improvement in the work of flax-stripping was noted by Mr C. J. Fulton, Chief Fibre Fxpert, during recent visits to the Manawatu. The men who operate the stripping machines are taking a great deal more care of their work than they used to do. Consequently there is a likelihood of economy and better production in this department of the flax industry. It is in this direction that the flaxmiller must look for the maintenance of a high standard of hemp for export. Mr Fulton expressed the opinion to a Post reporter that if the most could be made of the plant, phormium offered a better fibre than even Manila. It was much superior to sisal. Mr Fulton also referred to the flax industry in St. Helena, which he supervised for a time last year. The industry was at present the chief support of the Island, and would be much affected by the drop in the price of hemp. The principal mill is situated at Eongwood, near the residence of Napoleon during his exile. The Governor of the island, in his annual report to the Imperial Government, anticipates a great benefit to the community from the improvement in the flax industry.
