GENERAL CABLES.

The Congregational Union Congress has opened at Liverpool. The Rev. Ralph Wardlaw Thompis chairman. There is a great gathering of delegates. In the House of Commons the Under-Secretary for the Colonies, Colonel Seely, stated that the “All Red” Route Committee was considering an interim report, but would be unable to report finally until further information had been received from the colonies. In connection with the scheme proposed by Sir Wilfrid Laurier (Canadian Premier) —for the transfer to British Honduras (Central America) of all British Indians now in British Columbia, subjec t to their consent —tbe Indians protest against such removal. They prefer to be repatriated. Poles in Prussia are not allowed to speak the Polish language at public meetings. Therefore at recent meetings speeches were printed and distributed among the audience, who read them silently, aud then, also in silence, voted for or against the motions brought forward.

Blackboards were used for the purpose of recording the votes. The Police were powerless to interfere.

Melbourne, October 22

In the euphonium competition at Ballarat, Ogilvie (Collingwood) won with a score of 80 points. O’Brien (Dunedin) was third with 70 points. Sydney, October 22.

The fire in the 200-ft. level of the Block XIV mine, Broken Hill, is still smouldering. Efforts to reach the seat of it continue.

The body of Eddy, a fire-fighter who was overcome by fumes, has been recovered. Durban, October 21.

General Lord Methuen, Com-mander-in-Chief in South Africa, speaking at Durban, stated that Mr Haldane, Secretary of State for War, had directed him to consolidate the military forces in South Africa in order that the Motherland might be able to withdraw every soldier, leaving the defence of the country to the colonists.
