DEATH OF AN EARLY SETTLER.
New Plymouth, October 23
The death is reported of Mr W. K. Halke, a very old settler, who may be regarded as the father of the dairy industry, aged 89 years. He landed at Wellington in 1840, and introduced the first cows to that settlement. He had a small dairy farm and market garden near the present suburb of Kilbirnie in 1842, and erected the first flour mil Is at Wanganui and New Plymouth.
