Turbulent scenes were witnessed at a meeting of the London County Council. Mr Smith, secretary of the Right-to - Work Committee, insisted on moving an urgency motion regarding the provision of work for the unemployed, although the chairman had ruled it out of order.
Unemployed in the galleries created great disorder, shouting ‘'We ate hungry; give us work !”
Eventually they were expelled, shouting “Robbers! Hypocrites !”
Several policemen and attendants vainly tried to remove Mr Smith, their failure being due to obstructions by the Labour members. The council was compelled to adjourn without transacting business.
Tokio, October 14,
Japanese gendarmes at Chollado, Manchuria (? Korea) attacked a party belonging to a pro-Japanese society, which was going on a pilgrimage, killing twenty-two out of twenty-three. The gendarmes mistook the party ior an insurgent band.
London, October 15
In reply to questions asked in the House of Commons by Lord Edmund Talbot (Unionist member for Chichester division of Sussex), and Wm. Redmond (Nationalist member for East Clare), Mr. Asquith, Prime Minister, stated that the Government wpuld be unable to give facilities to any measure not wholly uncontroversial, but would be prepared to fully consider any proposals to relieve the Roman Catholic or any other religious denomination of any disabilities causing a practi cal grievance. The Government would not give a day for discussion of the Government’s action with reference to the Eucharistic procession, unless the Leader of the Opposition asked for it.
Tokio, October 15. The United States battleship fleet, under Admiral Sperry, is expected at Yokohama on October 17Officers and men on leave will be lodged in the Imperial Palace at Tokio.
An immense programme of festivities is being, prepared.
