Preaching at the City Temple, Loudon, recently, the Rev. R. J. Campbell referred to the Pan-Ang-licau Congress, and described it as an impressive spectacle, and one that was calculated to do much good. The English-speaking world would realise that the church was a mighty spiritual force. He loved the Church of England, and who did not, who realised how closely the fabric of her life was interwoven with that of the nation ? The church, whose metropolitan see was Canterbury, was in a true sense the descendant of the church founded by Augustine and his monks, under the favour of Rome. “I am oppressed,” he added, “by the thought that neither the Church of England nor the Free Churches, nor both together, have as yet realised the measure of their opportunities in relation to the needs of our time. Look how miserably the leaders of religious thought and action fail to understand the signs of the times. What do questions of ritual and discipline matter in comparison with the right or wrong of the established order in the things pertaining to our common life ? . . . Tell the rich and great that their prosperity is sin ; they have no right to it so long as a single soul goes hungry | in the world of want and pain. I The poverty of the poor represents |

the failure of the church and the wickedness of the rich. Let your archbishops and bishops declare war upon society as at present constituted. You will not have to wait long for the dragon to show his teeth. You will have to suffer, you will cease to be respectable, but you will gain immeasurably in spiritual power.”
