ASSASSINATION.

King and Crown Prliice of Portugal. Scene of the Tragedy. Queen’s Heroic Conduct. London, February 2. Portuguese advices state that King Carlos and the Crown Prince of Portugal have been assassinated. Three of the murderers were killed on the spot. The tragedy happened last evening, while the Royal Family were out driving iu the city. ; King Carlos and his Consort, Queen Amelie, who lately returned from a visit to England, with the ' Crown Prince and the Infante , Manuel (second son of King Carlos), aged 18, were driving in an open carriage at 5 o’clock, and when leaving the Praco do Commercio, a group, of men opened; fire on the Royal party with carbines. ’

The King and Crown Prince were mortally wounded, and Manuel received a slight wound. Queen Amelie had a miraculous escape. She rose to shield the Crown Prince, but was not hit.

The police at once opened fire on the regicides. The King and Crown Prince were removed to the Naval Arsenal, where it was found that each had been struck by three bullets. Father and son died shortly afterwards, within a few minutes' of one another.

Lisbon, February 2, King Carlos was wounded in the * shoulder. ’ The third bullet severed; v the carotid artery, and his Majesty died before he reached the arsenal. The Infanta Manuel was wounded in the side, jaw and arm. Captain Figueria, ,the Ring’s. ; orderly, fired, killing ohe« fegicidV. '* The police killed the second, and it is believed the third committed suicide in custody.

The assassins concealed five- 1 chambered repeating carbines beneath their cloaks.

: .The shops, theatres and cafes ' immediately closed, and grief and indignation was manifested.

It is believed the assassins were foreigners, French .and Spanish Anarchists.

The Lisbon forts are f ull of political prisoners- : ; Police domiciliary visits constantly reveal stores of arms and bombs.

The Government declare that they are not implicated in the crime, but a number of sergeants and subalterns of the army and navy and a number of Republican leaders have been arrested. Lisbon is quiet, and order is being maintained. New King to be Proclaimed. The Queen assumes the Regency during Manuel’s minority.. The Matin states that Manuel will be proclaimed King to-day.
