THE HEMP MARKET.
There are rumours of a slump in the flax industry and as a consequence there is a feeling of unrest among local millers. Mr Hawkins, Government grader, states that the market is weaker than for some time past. Good to fair is only realising £25 10s in Wellington and he says it costs the miller £26 per ton to produce it. Some millers are bound to close down unless there is a change for the better, ‘ ‘ There is one compensation that I must mention,” said Mr Hawkins, ‘‘the quality of the flax arriving is much improved.”
