Monday.
Ernest Maginnity, a young man, was arraigned on an indictment charging him with criminal assault on a gi rl under the age of 16 years, pleaded " not guilty " and the jury arrived at the same verdict. The prisoner was discharged. In the case in which the brothers Looney were charged with having stolen a sow belonging to L. Fraser, at Waituna, the jury brought in a verdict of Guilty against Walter Looney only, but recommended him to mercy on account of his youth. Joseph Looney was discharged as regards this case, and Walter Looney was remanded until Thursday in order that the Probation Officer might report upon his case.
In the case in which the brothers Looney were charged with having killed two ewes and a lamb, and maimed a lamb, the property of H. Coote, at Waituna, the jury brought in a verdict of Guilty against both of the accused, but recommended them to mercy on account of their youth. ju: j-.?rs were remanded until Thurs<'iy. Tuesday. Thomas Henry Baker was charged with having, on 26th October, discharged a firearm at his wife, Mary Jane Baker, with intent to do her grevi.-ms bodily harm, and also w?th having assaulted her and done acfnal bodily harm. The jury returned a verdict. of gP O^ of common assault. ~^yjf His Honor remanded prisoner for sentence until Thursday. A young man named Douglas Mickle pleaded guilty to a series of charges of theft of cutlery, &c, the property of Messrs Stewart and Co., timber merchants, while engaged as a clerk in their employ. Prisoner i»J~' ! , remanded until Friday for the rejjPt of the Probation Officer. Annie McWilliam was indicted for that on the 27th October last she did attempt to murder Ellen Dick. After some evidence had been taken prisoner then withdrew her plea of not guilty, and pleaded guilty. The jury was thereupon discharged. Prisoner was remanded for sentence until Thursday morning. At 5 p.m. the Court adjourned uqfcil 10 30 on Thursday morning. Thursday. Sentences: Annie McWilliam was sentenced to be imprisoned with hard labour in the Terrace Gaol for seven years. Walter Looney was sentenced to two years' hard labour for stealing a sow at Waituna, and to a similar term for killing and maiming sheep at the same place, the sentences to run concurrently. His younger brother, Joseph Looney, was sentenced to 18 months' hard labour for killing and maiming sheep. Thomas Henry Baker was sentenced to be imprisoned for one year with hard labour in the Terrace Gaol.
