The social dance at the hall last night was a great success, a very large number being present, dancing being kept up till daylight. MrW. B. Rhodes has a changed advertisement to-day and announces that all groceries and ironmongery is reduced to Wellington prices for cash over the counter. Mr Hamer had a smash up with his trap this morning. The trap and horse were left outside the hall when something startled the animal and he raced away and the trap collided with a post which overturned it, and the horse bolted clear away and galloped up the street. No one was in the trap, and the damage is not great. The Foxton Dranatic Club will give a vocal and dramatic performance at Public Hall next Wednesday evening. The Coroner's jury brought in a verdict that the body was that of Louis Chemis, that he committed suicide, and that there was not sufficient evidence to show whether he was insane or not. It was recently reported that a serious rising had occurred amongst the natives in the northern districts of the Transvaal, and a strong body of burghers had been despatched to suppress it. A large force of the Makatewe tribesmen, led by the chief Mpefu, attacked a laager occupied by General Joubert's detachment, but was repulsed and driven to the hills. The candidates nominated for the Tuapeka vacancy in the House of Representatives are: —Charles C. Rawlins, Opposition; James Sim, Government ; Robert Gilkison, Liberal Independent ; J. J. Ramsay, Liberal Independent; Hy. Symes, Labour. The general belief is that the fight will rest between Messrs Rawlins, Sim and Gilkison, with the odds in favour of the first-named. In diplomacy Bismarck's one motto was " My country —right or wrong," and seeing how much he did to serve that country, it was a melancholy reflection which he uttered once, that he had made no one happy, neither himself, his family, nor anyone else, " but probably many unhappy." Had it not been for him, he said, there would have been three great wars the less, and the lives of 80,000 men would not have been sacrificed! But, he added, " that I have settled with my Maker." The playing of golf on Sundays is practised to such an extent that in a certain parish in England, it is said, the hour of service has been changed to suit the convenience of players. Charms of all descriptions are the rage of the moment, and from a narrow band of gold for a bangle can depend a grotesque monkey or a lucky pig, exquisitely modelled and bristling with sparkling jewels. Mr Taylor, speaking on the Estimates, urged the importance of having the Home boats travel via Cape Co-1 lony, where there was an immense opening for New Zealand produce, which they were now debarred from owing to the difficulty of shipping.
