The returns of the elections to the 26tb July show : — Tories and Unionists . . 894 Liberals . . . . 158 Parnellitea . . . . 10 Anfci Parnellites . . 62 In the polling in the English counties the Liberals are being returned with increased majorities, varying from 1000 to 8000 in the mining and manufacturing districts. The capture by the Tories of four Scotch seats is owing to the fear of . Disestablishment. Oscar Wilde has been made bankrupt at the instance of the Marquis ot Qneensberry, who claims £600, costs of the libel action. Japan has requested China to pay the indemnity in London. This is regarded as an indication that Japan proposes to give large orders for war material in England. Japan intends to spend eight millions sterling on the construction of ironolads in England. At the wool sales an inferior selection was offered, but there was a spirited sale, and prices remain . unchanged. The present series will close on 80th inst., and the next sales will begin on 24th September. The death is announced of the Eight Rev. Dr. Thorold, Bishop of t (Winchester, aged 70. He was consecrated Bishop of Rochester in 1877, and succeeded Dr Browne at WinChester f >ur years ago. Deceased was the author of several devotional works, one of which, " The Presence of Christ " has gone through 20 | editions.
