Siam is an extensive kingdom of south-eastern Asia consisting of 41 provinces f/ each governed, by. a Phya or gre&t' fqncjiidjn&iy: Its -area is estimated at 280,550 square miles, and population from 4 million to 6 million. . The foreign, commerce is 1 carried on at Bangkok a few miles «P the river Me Nam. The chief exports are tin, rice, teak, pepper, $a.lt fish, dried fish,, teel-seed, bullocks, skins, sapan-wood. cardamoms, horns, birds nests, &o. The government is monarchical, and the present King rejoices in the names of Phrabat Somdet Phra, Earamindr Maha Chulatonkbrn Chula Chom Klao Phra Chow Yuhua, ' The capital Bangkok, hag a" population of 600,000. The army only- musters some 8000 men, and the navy is represented by a few small gunboats.
