.» The Church of England Bishop of Ely has given a dispensation to the people of his diocese to eat meat during Lent, owing to the prevalence of influenza ; but on condition that those who avail themselves of this dispensation shall each day " recite with their private prayers one of the penetential Psahm." The Bishop of Exeter has "also issued a dispensation foL- two pnridhns in his diocese. Penances in the Church of England take us back to pre -reformation times.
