Manawatu Herald. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1889. DUNEDIN EXHIBITION.
Our contemporary Typo asserts that ''The Duuedin Exhibition is one of tho greatest mistakes the colony has ever made. . . . The stupidest part of the affair to fix it coincidentallj' with the Paris Exhibitiou, to which all the world is going. New Zealand is said to be miserably represented there — all her exhibits are in Dunedin, for New Zealonders themselves to look at!" On the broad question, undoubtedly our contemporary is correct, but if all t.i.o exhibits worth sending to the Paris Exhibition are retained at Diiriedih, undoubtedly to that portion of the world that cannot afford to go ti) Paris, the show will be we 1 worth seeing. We unfortunate y believe that a very large number of the colonists in New Zealand a id Australia will not be able to afford a trip to the world's fair at Paris, and may theiefore c ntent themselves with a trip to Dunedin. This being so, we would like to direct the attention of our hemp-millers to the importance of hnying heir industry suitably represented. 'Ihey should spare no aains, tut proparo the very best samples for exhibition. We may fully expect, from the importance that the phormium tenax has assumed, that a targe number of manufacturers from the neighbour, ing colonies and America will visit Dunedin to ins. oct tho material they have so much need of, and exhibit' ing is as good an advertisement a 9 millers can have. The matter was broaqhed many months ago by Mr Gardner, but in the excitement of the times, neglected ; but now when the industry has shaped itself into tho appea ancp of ' perma»ency, every effort to obtain new outlets should be energetically looked after. We hope some of our leading millers will move in the matter.
