FROZEN MEAT.

THE'DETERIORATION IN ENG-

LAND

INFORMATION FROM HIGH

COMMISSIONER

[Press 'Association. ] WELLINGTON, Oct. 7

in the House, of Representatives this afternoon Mr Massey 'said that on the 11th of August,. Mr Xysnar brought up the question of the temperature at which meat was held in the 'freezing stores in England, and he (the Prime Minister) promised he would obtain the necessary information. Accordingly a cable was sent to the High Commissioner, reading as follows:—"It has -been.-suggested tliat the cause of such deterioration in frozen meat in Great Britain is due to the stores; holding at a higher temperature than that prevailing in New Zealand. I understand the Home stores maintain a temperature of 15 to 18 degrees, , as against 30 to 11 degrees her©.' I > shall be glad of a report." • The following reply has now been received:—"With reference to your' telegram of the 27th August, regarding the deterioration of meat in store in Great Britain, the Ministry of Food states that the temperature maintained is as stated in your telegram, namely 15 to 18 degrees, and that! this is the same as before the war. The Ministry does not consider the deterioration can be ascribed to the temperature at this end, hut that .much of the unsatisfactory Bappearance is duo to< dismemberment, the consequent chafing, and shrinkage, and in some cases too long, storage in Isev: Zealand. The Director of F«od Investigation Board does not consider the change from 10 degrees to 15-18 degrees is likely to account for the deterioration in appearance as''far as mould or bacteria are concerned, provided the temperature •is maintained .steady."

The Prime Minister .said that the ivatter was one of . considej'able im r portane?. to the Dominion, and ho took thisl opportunity of giving it a.s much publicity as possible.
