SYDNEY, Aug. 10. The Governor opened the. State Parliament. The Speech foreshadowed amongst other things a Bill for amending the system of electing members to the Assembly, profiteering prevention, legislation for the endowment of mothers, compulsory wheat pool, grouping of State industrial undertakings under a Ministerial head, establishment of a rural bank, Government Insurance Office, regulation of the hours of labor, the emendation of the Industrial Arbitration Act, and a Royal Commission to inquire into the administration of the railways, including a reinstatement of the 1917 strikers.

The Australian Mutual Provident Society is investing £1,000,000 in the new r peace loan, making the Society's total of various loans £9,680,000. A fire-sit the premises of Hoskings and Company, drapers in the city, caused damage to the extent of £10, - 000. The fifteenth meeting of the Australian Association for the Advancement of Science opens at Hobart on January sth| With the exception of a. co-operative meeting held with the British Association in 1914 this will be the first heM since 1913.
