Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, Aug. 4. A War Office communique regarding Mesopotamia states: A strong British reconnoitring column proceeding southward from Hillah was attacked and roughly handled by tribesmen on July 24th, but succeeded in fighting its way back to Hillah, after suffering 300 casualties, and losing a field-gun, 12 machineguns, other material, and a large number of horses and mules.

Disturbances in the Lower Euphrates continue. The railway from'Hillah to Bagdad has been cut several times. The garrison at Duvani has withdrawn to Ibgali. which the tribesmen unsuccessfully attacked on the 28th. There is no Tiews of the garrison at Kufu, which is invested.
