ADVENTURES OF A STEER

There was a big commotion- in Christchurch late on Wednesday afternoon owing to the vagaries ot a prime fat steer which escaped from the Addington yards. He was chased ' by a stockman, but in his hurry the latter forgot his whip, and he was powerless to turn the animal. The frolicsome bovine had a clear run through the centre of the city, but in Colombo Street a pedestrian was not quick enough in getting to shelter. The steer tossed him playfully rolled him over, prodded him twice with his horns, and then moved on, his subsequent movements being watched from defensive positions by large crowds. A man who emerged from an hotel and ventured into the road to see what was amiss was caught amidships, tossed, and left winded on tho road. A woman was next tossed, and then a vacant section was explored by the steer, and in this j lie was corralled. Messages were despatched to tho saleyards and drovers came along with some well-behaved cattle. The j steer mixed with these, and 1 he was , got back to the yards without trouble. None of those who were tossed j were seriously hurt, but the first j man to suffer the attentions of the ; steer h;u! to have wounds on his head and body dressed at the hospital.
