THE VERSAILLES TREATY

DR E. J. DILLON'S SCATHING

CONDEMNATION

The following extract, which is almost prophetic 'in its declarations. is from Dr E. J. Dillon's recentlypublished- volume on the work of the great Peace Conference. Dr Dillon is one of the front-rank European publicists, and no one is better «ualiiied than he to give *an authoritative opinion oh Near East problems: — "Whatever the tests one applies to T,he work of the Conference —ethical, social, or political—they reveal it as a factor eminently calculated to sap high interests, to weaken the moral nene of the present generation, to fan the flames of national and racial hatred, to dig an abyss between the classes and the masses, t.nd to throw open the sluice-gates to the inrush or the waves of Anarchist internationalities. ; Truth, jusitice, equity, and liberty have been twisted and pressed into the service of economico-ptilitical boards. In the United States the people • who prided themselves on their aloofness are already fighting cner European, interests. In Europe e^ery nation's hand is. raised against its i-uling class. Every Government is .making its policy subservient to tlie needs of the future war which is universally looked upon as an unavoidable outcome of the Versailles Ponte. Imperialism and m'iiitaidsm are striking roots in «oil -vi:here they vere hitherto unknown. In a Avord, Prussianism, instead of being de>stroyed, has been openly adopted by its ostensible enemies, and the huge sacrifices offered up by the heroic ■ annies ■'of ■ the foremost-nations are If nig misused to givd one-half .-of the world just cause to rise up. against the other half."
