Mr Churchward, representing one

of the applicants in the Nelson district, asked for a ruling as to the attendance of applicants at the meeting of the committee. The chairman said that it would be sufficient-if they were represented by their solicitor, unless it was lecessary for them to be present to answer serious .objections.., ■ ]\lr. Maitland recalled that a former committee laid it do^'n as a ]jrinr:iple that applicants should attend fit ldasfc once a. year f-o that the committee1" would "see them personally. Mr R. McCalum also pointed nut that pe.rso7ial' attendance would' impose a- liarclship on distant applicants. ...The. chairman said .that if a former coninij'tteo had expressed a desire that licensees should put, in a personal apuearaaice at least once a ye.ar that wish should be respected as far •as possible; but the committee tvould be reasonable -in the matter. ■ THE 'APPLICATIONS.

For the most part the reports of the police and the ' Her.lfch Officer with respect to the various licensed houses were that tilings : were satisfactory, and in these cases' the 'applications were granted in quick .succession. But in a number of cases'it wfts represented' that repairs or building improvements were desirable,- and in. these instance's the comn ittee held the ai)plicatioris over for three months. Tre Junction .Hotel, at Spring Creek, was described a-s structurally quite out of date. •••The 'Owners, it was stated, wero Staples and Co., of Welliu^ton. Mr liayner moved that this application bo held over till the next quarterly meeting and the owners ho notified, that if the place was not rebuilt the_ committee would '.refuse 'to issue a license. He referred to the fact that.themembers, of the committee had frequently expressed dissatisfaction with the character of the building.-./ ■:. ]-"'' ..■;,,.'•/■>/ •' \ :.:y," t -•,■':■'■ \ Th«vchaarmah saictihe- di3. : no.o>:tliirilc the. committee i could go. to the extent of ■demanding, a new, building. '' He sxiggested that the motion be altered to read that the ..plnce- must be brought up to the required standard. Anyhow, this, to all appearances, meant the same thing as complete reconstruction. Mr R-ayiier, did not feel inclined to vary ivhe terms ©f his motion. The chairman then moved an amendment that the application be held over till the next quarterly neeting. aaid the owners be notifieaS that the 'house must be brought up to the rtandard required by the Health Officer Avithin that time, or the license' %v-ould be- refused. The amendment was carried. OTHK RESERVATION'S.

In, the case of the Criterion Hotel, J>'.enheim, the application was held over for three months, the owners and the licensee to be informed that if the committee's requirements in regard to repairs hod not been effected in that timt> the license would be definitely refused. Similar resolutions were passed in respect to the following hotels: — Feny (Spring Creek), "Post Office j (Haveloek), Masonic (H.avelock), I Felorus, and one or two hotels on the I Nelson side.

j In the case of the Commercial ) Hotel -(Blenheim) which was destroyI cd by fire recently, •it was reported a that a. temporai'y bar was being conI ducted.
