SPORTS AND PASTIMES

RUGBY FOOTBALL

A seven-a-side tournament for tho Tucker Shield will be held on the Domain on Thursday, commencing at--10.30 a.m. The 10th M.R. Band will render musical selections during the day.

RUGBY UNION.

The weekly meeting 07~ the Marlborough Rugby Onion was held last eveniug, when there were present:— Dr R. Noble-Adams (chairman)1, Messrs H. 11. Bagge, .R. Mason, C. Costello, L. Cragg, J.. H. Priddle, A. Webster, J. T. Rowe!, W. Lamb, and R. Jellyman (secretary).

INSURANCE.

The first matter dealt with was a' letter received from the Awailere Club intimating that that club declined to participate in the benefits of the insurance scheme which the Union is promoting, on the ground* that it considers the scheme ininadequate, and also saying that it is endeavoring to get an insurance company to insure the players of the» club. -

Dt Noble-Adams said that the* Union had already l6oked to theinsurance companies before trying ascheme of its own, but the companies would not insure footballers unless at prohibitive premiums. .'

The fact was stressed .by another member that if, all the clubs took part, then, each year the scheme was in existence, the capital would increase, if it were not—and it would not be—drawn on to a very large extent; and then the benefits derived would be Larger. A letter was received from the Opawa Club stating that it is in accord with the insurance scheme, and. had passed a resolution "That this club is in agreement with the general scheme of insurance, but that it will, provided other clubs are of the same opinion, guarantee toinsure 45 players, thtjs putting the scheme into operation immediately." Several members, thought this waft a good idea, as 45 was the number of men usually played by anyoneclub on a Saturday, with a senioiv a junior, and a thirds team- out. Tha men would not be insured individually, bxit if injured would ! receive the benefits of the fund.

A PROTEST,

A protest) was lodged: by the Awatere Olub against the '■ Mo,utere Olub playing S. Luke on Saturday as a junior when he had already played in two matches as a Senior. The protest was signed .by a number <jf members; and the , referee of the match.

The rules say that a player is^ asenior if he plays in two senior matches as an emergency, or if he ia selected as a. senior once; and he will be reinstated '"■ as a junior if he "stands down" v for two playing Saturdays.1 ~; ';; It was resolved that the matter be held over tillriext week, but in the meantime' Luke be instructed not to play^3lugby next-Saturday if he desired to play as a junipr. again. MARYBOROUGH'S REPRESENTA■"■■■•■i''''1 ■'•'■' ■;%v|TiyßS.>:': . •. It was decided to nominate tfie following to ' represent the province in tlie mter-Island match and on the Australian '.. r "tour:'—Phillips, -' wing three-cjuarter; a very strong recommendation for inclusion in' the team \ Maher, Fisher, Harding,: and J. O'Brien. .
