ANGLO JAPANESE ALLIANCE.

SPECULATION REGARDING

RENEWAL

PROBABLE EFFECTS OF

ABROGATION

[PBEBfI ABBOOIATJOWj (The Times .Service.*

LONDON, May 28. The Times's Tokio correspondent reports: "The Foreign Office states that the Governments at.Tokio and London have noi yet discussed the conditions of a renewal of the AngloJapanese Alliance, although the time of giving notice of abrogation of the agreement expires in July. It seems to be taken for granted that the revision of 1911 will be allowed to stand. The confidence thereon is apparently reciprocated in London. The official calm at Tokio strikingly contrasts with the atmosphere of distrust fefiilting from newspaper speculations in Japan and abroad. "Oritiag in the Far East are particularly prone to overlook the fact that the larger benefits of the Alliance were never greater than they are to-day. Abrogation Avould foster a revolt throughout the Middle and Near East and play directly into the hands of the Bolsheviks. Japan does not object to the British Dominions consulting their best interests, but regarding the cabled report that Australia desires to be considered before any final decision is reached, it is felt that the Australian position could be made clear without the creation of an erroneous impression that the country is wholly opposed to the Alliance. , '•'Similarly news from Washington ', overlooks the provisions of the 1919 [ agreement safeguarding Britain and America. This has caused much j heartburning in Japan, but the nation is now . reconciled to the limitation that Japan greatly desires good relations with America. "If is not gainsaid that there is widespread anti-Japanese sentiment in China and- Russia, the effects of which cannot be ignored."
