The project has received substantial -support from the London merchants. "The trustees of Sir Edward C'assel donated £300,000, and the Lord Mayor, on behalf of the city, to-day .donated a further £50,000. Replying to an address of welcome, His Majesty paid a tribute to the response of the universities to the call of the war and to the brilliant contributions to the science of- modern warfare. He emphasised that a London' degree was valued beyond the British Isles and the advantages afforded by the resources of the were,giving the University a unique influence in the education system of the Empire.
