COMPETITIONS.

The following report was received by the Marlborough A., and P. Committee on Saturday from Mr Arthur Avery, the judge in the rape-growing competition:-— •'Having completed my judging of this competition, I beg to report asfollows:—'

"The entries notified to me werfr 22 in number, viz.: William Bell, one; J. B. Dick, four; Dollar .-and Sdns, four; 0. P. Goulte.r, two,; H. 0. Goulter, threa; A, Latter, one, T. O. .Goiilter, A. Latter, and W, Pike and Sons. . "The crops of Messrs C.;.P, Goulter and T. Morrin were inspected by me, but, as the crops were a (partial failure owing to lack of rain, i have not made, a report on them*-r "I beg to report on the other crops indpividuallf as ibllovvs:— '*A. Hodgson.—Two entries; land ploughed out of grass; manure iMgi 1 cwt. super-phosphate per ';"att||> sown early in November with 2Hwof seed ' per acre; land somewhofc-wt-edy with sorrel and couch grass j crop inclined to .be patchy. '|*a "J. F. Neal.—Two rehfi3<p; ploughed early. July, out of grisis land and left to fallow; manure used 1 cwt. per acre, viz., t cwt. superphosphate and i cwt. Wood and lone; scad used 2Jibs, per acre; sown 20th October, 3919; land clean and well worked. Judged December 27th. 1919. • i

"A. Thomson.—One entry; land ploughed cut of grass July 14th: land had two tons of lime per acreapplied to it; seed used 2|lbs. per acre; sown on October 18th, 1919; land eleaui and well worked. Judged December 31st.

"Dollar and Sons.—Four entries; land ploughed out of grass land; i.o manure used; seed used If lbs. per acre, sown on 15th. November, 1919; judged January 30th, 1920; land clean and well worked.

"J. B. Dick.—Four entries; i» two entries the land was ploughed cut of grass and no manure was used for these sowings; the coed used was 31bs. per acre, sown on November 10th. Judged February 3rd, 1920. Land clean and welt worked. (Note. —These were the crops that received second fnd third qwards.) The other two entries were sown on land off which a crop* o( peas had been taken. The peashad been sown with manure, seed" used was 31bs. per acre. Judged 27th December. Land rclean and well worked.

"I place the awards as follows: — "A. Thomson Ist: Best feeding value; very -lean and lire© front blight. 95 poms.

"J. B. Dick 2nd: Next best feeding value; practically no blight of any consequence. 85. points.

"J. B. Dick 3rd: Almost identical with No. 2. 83 points. "Dollar and Sons, v.1.c.: Four entries, almost equal; slight blight; hardly as mush, grown as 2nd ami 3rd. 80 points. "J. F. ' Neal, 1.c.: A good crop, but as a first crop, suffered front droughty weather. The grower deserves much credit for the showing made und3r the conditions; slight blight, and plants somewhat hard. 75 points." A resolution was passed thanking Mr Ayery for his judging of the competition, and the committee agreed to his suggestion that on future occasions the time for judging be limited to not later than tfi& yist of January.
