DUNEDIN, Jan. 22. ''/An inquest was opened to-day on the- body of a newly-born infant found in a sack on St. Clair beach on Tuesday with a piece of linen tied tightly round its neck.

Dr Evans said that the body was fully developed and well nourished. There was a circular pressure mark on the neck. He was,of opinion that the child had lived and that, the cause of death was asphyxia. There was no water on the lungs, showing that it had not been drowned. There must have been some interference with the air supply. A constable .said that ;£&e bag had apparently ;been in the sea, but it could not have been there long. It was found at high-water mark.

The Coroner adjourned the; inquiry sine die.
