HIDE AND TALLOW SALE.

The fortnightly sale of hides and tallow was held in Wellington on jp'ridav. A good catalogue of super-condi-tioned hides and calfskins was submitted to a fair attendance of buyers. Tanners did not exercise their right of selection so freely as on previous occasions; in fact, they only selected superior ox and cow hides, leaving the light-weights, inferior, and calf to be submitted by auction. Competition was keen for lots not selected by tanners, and prices realised were about on a par with the rates ruling at the sale held a fortnight ago. Calfskins were in keen request at an advance upon late rates; superior and good lines fetched up to 40d per Ib. Quotations:—

Tallow.:—The market was firm at a slight decline, according to quality, upon prices current at the last auction sales. In casks, 65s to 70s; in tins, etc., 35s 6d to 63s 6d.
