A feature of the quarterly return Tby the British Registrar-General of Marriages, Births, and Deaths for the three months ended June 30th is the preponderance of male births .over female, the figures being 76,312 and 72,512 respectively. Male births were thus in proportion to female births as 1052 to 1000, the average proportion in the ten preceding •second quarters being 1039. The 248^824 births registered d,uri£g the

quarter correspond to an annual rate of 15.9 per 1000 total population in 1917. Of the total births 9931 were illegitimate, or 484 less than the number in the corresponding quarter of 1918.
