CONCILIATION COUNCIL
DEMANDS OF CLERKS' UNION
CHRISTCHyiICH, Nov. 17. The industrial dispute between the newly formed Christchurch Clerks', Cashiers', and Office Employees' Union and the employers came before the Conciliation Council to-day. Excopt for a little individual criticism, none of the clauses in the union's demands wa,s discussed, the employers' agents holding that it was impossible to embody in one document recommendations to govern the many trades and professions cited. The proceedings were adjourned on the understanding that if in the meantime the union does not draft fresh proposals the Council cannot make any recommendations to the Arbitration Court. In i'll, the union cited 330 employers and many applications were lodged by employers and employees for exemption. The union asked for 38 hours a week and wages ranging from 25s for the first year to 110s for the fifth year of service.
