Advice has been j-eeeived in Wellington of the death in England of Mr J. W. Joynt, principal of Nelson College from 1889 to 1898, and subsequently Registrar of the New Zearland University. The deceased was born in Ireland, and entered the famous Trinity College in 1873 as First Classical Sizar. During his undergraduate's course he obtained almost every term first-class honors in classics (generally head of the list), ■nifcntal. and moral science, and sometimes English, literature. He graduated in 1877 with first q>lace in classical finals, and second in mental and moral science, obtaining the University Studentship of £100 for seven, years. He also obtained the gold and silver medals of the University Historical and Philosophical Societies for oratory and composition. He was presented with the M.A. Degree in 1881, and sat at once for a fellowship, but, his health breaking down, lie come to New Zealand in 1886. He entered on office as principal of the Nelson College in 1889, and held that position for ten years, resigning in 1898. On the establishment of the Victoria College in Wellington, Mr Joynt was second on the list, of'candidates for the Chair of Classics out. of thirty-seven applicants. He was .shortly afterwards- appointed Registrar of the University of New Zeajand. He also acted'as lecturer in 'fe 8" «* the Victoria College from \m to 1901. He had acted as Lon•,«on agent .for the New Zealand Uni■•yersity for a number of years.
