DEPREDATIONS OF SHAGS

At the last meeting of the Marlborough Acclimatisation Society oainest discussion .ensued concerning the stocking of tihe rivers with tho brown trout fry. It was felt that although the Society had been doing its best during the war period a greater effort would need to be made for the coming year. As the time is not yet opportune to commence the new hatcheries at Waterlea Fark, it was decided that operations would have to be resumed at the Springlands hatcheries, and a sub-commit-tee was accordingly set up tcr visit the hatcheries and were given the power to act.so as to ensure hatching operations being commenced in time. The meeting w.ent into the i( sitter of the destructiveness of the shags in the Peloras district, where they nre very numerous and are destroying large quantities of trout. It w ras resolved to ask the Society's representative in that district, Mr E. F. Healy, to endeavor to arrange for their^ destruction with a limit if expenditure, at present, of £10. The hon. secretary was instructed to communicate with the Auckland Society and ask -what it had done concerning the importation of stubble quail from Australia as arranged for some time ago.

The South Canterbury Society wrote with reference to the introduction of Canadian geese, stating that a shipment of these birds would be arriving shortly, and that this Society wrould.be advised as soon as they were received. It was decided to reply that the Society was still desirous of obtaining a number of the geese for liberation in this district.

The Canterbury Society also wiote concerning a proposed importation of Califomian quail from California, and asking the probable cost. It was resolved to reply that inquiries were bring made as to the cost, and-on receipt of the information it would be forwarded.
