WELLINGTON, July 3. At the opening of the conference of the New Zealand Labor party the national president (the Hon. J. T. Paul) said that Labor now ■'.''had a great opportunity which might not occur again in the life-time of the delegates. •' Labor's solution of the present difficulties, including that concerning; coal, was the only practical solution. v The conference s decisions would form the basis of'the party's platform at the general election,, and he asked the delegates to consider the remits in that Ugh*. The executive, added. Mr Paul, repelted a" year pf great progress. The membership had reached the highest limit in the history of the party, "and now numbered over 21,500 financial members. ', There was every reason fer viewing the future with confidence.?, There were indications that the /mass of > the. .people were at last alive t» .tn© immediate' necessity for a change' 6f Goverrimentyi and they were showing a decided , preference for Labor.
