PURCHASES OF ARMY SUPPLIES

. The report of General Win tour, Director of Army Contracts, on the provision of supplies for the Army, shows that the value of purchases for the war exceeded £700,000,000, in- / eluding £200,000,000 on behalf of the Alhes. The present annual value of the purchases is about £350,000,000, including £100,000,000 for the Allies. It cost £0,500,000 to purchase the Home wool clip aiid £35,000,000 to purchase the Australian clip. The control of wool resulted in great economies to the State, estimated at -313,000,000. . The . control of jute saved £6,500,000. The Director instanced other large economies.
