A YOUNG MAN FINED
Tiie rights and wrongs oEa disturbance which occurred in town on .Saturday night'were threshed out before |Mr F. o*B. Loughnan, S.M., this morning. A young European, named Jack' Lewis, and a Chinaman named Charlie Chick, were charged on the information of Constable Quay le with having used threatening language whereby a breach of the- peace was occasioned. Both pleaded not guilty. Mr C. H. Mills appeared for Chick". The story believed hy the Magistrate was the one told by the Chinaman. This defendant said that 'he v;as walking along the path in Alfred Street with W. Zimmerman,-and was in the vicinity of the Literary Institute when lie was accosted, by Jack Lewis, who was one of a party of six young fellows. The Chinam-.m hit at the European and missed him. and a brief interchange oi blows followed. Peters, a more juvenile member .of Lewis's company also made to attack Chick, but, said the latter; "I took no notice of him." the Chinaman walked off, and had gone a few yards when Lewis assaulted him and knocked him down. Chick got up. and running after Lewis held him until the police arrived. ' Giving evidence, Chick said that lie had had no previous acquaintance with Lewis; he. did not know him from "a bar of soap."
