A communique states: "Large enemy forces east of 'Rheims tq<Vk the offensive en rt front of ten kilometres" between Lampompelle and Prosnes,"but were completelydefeated. The attack was most carefully prepared by means of • a prolonged artillery "bombardment accompanied by chlorine gas. ' The enemy ut the outset-penetrated; some parts'of our. front Ime;'btifc counter-attacks -were immediately launched, and 'the enemy werp driven, out of almost every point. A vigorous counter-offensive in the afternoon ejected the last of the enemy, who were thus 'thrown back completely, suffering heavy losses in their "fruitless attacks.
