P. AND P. SHOW

SATISFACTORY ENTRIES

The annual show to be held by the Mai'iborough Agricultural ami Pastoral Association next Tuesday and Wednesday promises to be, a ~mov«, than usually attractive event:"' The aggregate of the entries is (33 move thain that of last year, and tShe importance of the Show- will 'be enmitiwed by the appearance—tor the, first time locally—of a Government stand of exhibits such as the displays with, which the Agricultural Departmeivfc has so substantially assisted the Mariawatn and other leading associations. The material that will go 10, form this exhibiton is already on the ground, and will be fitted up by representatives of the Department. I It weighs some twenty tons, and occupies *v lot. of space.

The total r.uin.ber oi t-^nipeti tivc entries for the Show is 10^8, as against 985 recorded last year. The details of the various sections- with tho comparative figuies '..re nis follows : —

The smaller "number'of light; horsos may be accounted for very largely by ih&i demand made on the rcbouw«s' of tho district for the requirements of thY war, and also, no doubt, by the. fact, that many horse-owners'- ha.ye gon& to the front. The entry of sheep, 12 less, has been affected by tho handicap imposed on fat stock by tho recent drought and the congestion at the freezing works, but not to such an e-xtent as might hive been expected. There is the average representation of cattle, but the pLyjs have declined. Farm produce m . intains its' usual standard, but, considering that the district raises scne of the best {rraih-and'Other field products in the world, this section certainly ought to be -better patronised by the agriculturists. Home produce bulks more largely than ever. A special feature will be. the exhibits of honey, which will be judged l-y a Government expert. The poultry section, a new department, is fairly" well supported. Tho school competitions evidence their increasing;'popularity, and th^y. should m.nke a very' interesting display. The instructional judging eludes for school children are being carefully organised by the 'Marlhoroiiisch branch, of the Educational Institute, and the committee of the A. and P Association, •working in conjunction, ond they' should lend in no small degree to the importance of the Show.
