THE AUSTRALASIANS.

EXCITEMENT ON BOARD THE

TRANSPORTS,

WHEN DESTINATION WAS

KNOWN

LETTER FROM "BANJO" PATERSON.

(Received Jan. 12, 7.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 12. "Banjo" Paterson, the Herald's commissioner with the Expeditionary Force, says: "There was great excitement aboard the transports when order-s were issued to get ready to disembark in Egypt, when we expected to remain aboard for weeks yet. The expedition was officially informed that the Turks put up a gun in the lied Sea with a view to blowing the convoy out of the water, but a fore© from Aden chased them off and captured the gun. As we passed through the canal the camps of Indian troops stretched along the banks welcomed the Australasians cordially. The voyage was one of continuous drill, drill, drill."
