One British soldier brought five in a woeful state of rags and dirt, with their feet protruding from. :their bodts. # The retiring invaders vented/ their rage on the better-class houses.' They smashed mirrors and cleared the cellars. Half-emptied champagne- and absinthe bottles -were strewed about. Which testified to,the. suddenness or ,the retreat. ■ .■: :.
