LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

ADDRESS-IN-REPLY

The Council met at 2.30 p.m

The Hon. Mr EARN SHAW congretulated the Government on the Speech. There were things in it with which he disagreed, but it was worthy of a Government which made good its promises. The Hon. Mr WIGRAM expressed approval of the defence scheme, but did not approve of a local navy. He suggested an alteration in the death duties to encourage men to cut up estates among a larger number of relatives.

The Hon. Mr DUTHIE endorsed the Speech. The people were never so prosperous and happy. The cost of living was regulated by supply and demand
