COMMERCIAL.

•-4» ■ " GRAIN AND PRODUCE

MARKETS

(Christchurch Press, There is a good quantity of wheat offering, and a fair amount of business is being done at quotations. Millers are still in the market, and for prime li'ues will give a little more than merchants are able.to offer m view of the latter having to re-sell. There being no 'surplus to export, prices are keeping firm. There appears to be no prospect .of^any immediate rise in outside markets, as it is generally believed that, .the prospective supplies will be ample for requirements, even although there is- a shortage in India and tne Argentine, the North American winter wheat crop being an abnormally large- one. The oats market shows a weakening tendency. There is likely to be no expont business doing unless cheap freights can be obtained, and local prices would have to come down before business could be done with London. Advice from there states'that quotations received fPt>m New Zoaiancl are Is to Is 6d per quarter above the present London . prices. The local conditions are also tending, to lower prices. For Southland oats merchants are reporting to be offering only Is 7d at country stations for Aggrade Gartons, and' against such a low figure Canterbury merchants cannot compete in the trade with the North Island. ■ I|t is considered, therefore, that Is 8d at country stations is the outside value of A grade oats.

The potato market has further eased, as a large quantity is now being offered on the North Island marked, in cousequence of the heavy purchases in Canterbury during the past three weeks., The price now offered by most merchants is £3 5s at country stations, and even at this figure they are not anxious to do business until the market seems more assured. The Avent weather that has set in will put a stop to digging, but it will scarcely affect deliveries, as the railway sheds in the potato-growing districts are now filled with potatoes.

Red clover is now beginning to be offered more freely. , Although some large yields are rei>ortedj the area under ; the crop this season is said to be not very large.
